Car Windshield Repair Shops

windshield replacementWhile your first instinct is to get upset at the damaged windshield you now have, don’t! Feeling upset is not going to fix your car glass. You know what will, however? A certified technician. Besides, calling for a car windshield repair will help you get everything running smoothly in no time. Here is what to do to make sure you, get a quick repair, save money, and have peace of mind:

  1. Start by Taking a Photo

With today’s technology, there is no reason not to grab your phone and take a picture of your damaged windshield. What does this accomplish? It helps you have proof to show your insurance. This way, if they ask for a detailed description of the damage, you can send them an exact picture. Plus, it will help you keep track of the damage before and after it gets a car windshield repair.

  1. Measure the Damage

Did you know that the size of the damage determines whether you are legible for a repair or need a replacement instead? A big crack splitting off in many directions is not the type of damage that typically gets a repair. For that reason, measuring the crack is important. If the damage is less than six inches long, then a repair is probably the best option. Not to mention that depending on your insurance, you could be covered. Yet, if the damage is longer than six inches, your windshield will simply need a replacement.

  1. File an Insurance Claim

Once you have taken a photo and measured the crack, you will need to file an insurance claim. Many auto glass repair shops, like LP Auto Glass Orlando, deal with your insurance for you. However, in the case that you cannot get an auto glass repair shop to file a claim with your insurance on your behalf, you must do it yourself. Usually, if you have a comprehensive coverage, that means you are covered for getting your car windshield repair.

  1. Get Your Windshield Repaired

Once you have done everything else, you will need to call an auto glass repair shop and make an appointment. If you have a major windshield damage, ask for a mobile windshield repair. This service allows a technician to drive to you. It also keeps you safe on the road!

If you do these four easy steps, your car windshield repair should run quickly and smoothly. Plus, you will end up saving money and avoiding stress.

Clean Windshield

windshield replacementSometimes, you might be unfortunate and find that your car’s windshield has been damaged. Parking in a safer area could have possibly averted the harm. Yet, it is important to remember that your windshield can easily get damaged simply because of your actions and neglect, even if you drive and park in a safe area. There is one particular factor that plays a major role in the shape of your car’s glass, and that’s to keep a clean windshield. If there is dirt, such as mud, bird droppings, or dead love bugs, it can ruin the windshield and windows if not cleaned off for a long time. As a result, it is your priority to keep your car clean, particularly your windshield and windows, in order to prevent an auto glass replacement from becoming necessary.

Why Is Cleaning the Glass Important? Clean glass not only helps clear your driving visibility, but it also protects the glass from damage. For instance, if you spend the day at the beach, your car is most likely going to be dusty at the end of your outing from all the sand the wind blew around. Though sand does not seem to be threatening (after all, kids play in it), it is harmful to the windshield. The tiny grains can scratch the glass, especially if you use your windshield wipers to wipe the dusty layer off of your car. The friction caused by the contact ruins the glass in an awful way, forcing you to get an auto glass replacement, which you want to avoid. The same thing can be said of bird droppings. Although unpleasant, for the most part they seem harmless. Yet, leaving them smudged to the glass will only make them harder to remove. They’ll dry up, and then when you do attempt to remove them, they’ll also scratch at the glass. In the end, all this dirt and scratching will weaken the windshield and windows, leaving them susceptible to getting chips and cracks and easily getting shattered. To top it off, having a dirty windshield also means that your windshield wipers are dirty, and this increases the chance of the glass getting damaged.

How to Thoroughly Clean the Glass So if dirty windshields and windows create a hazard, how do you clean them thoroughly and properly to avert having to get an auto glass replacement? Cleaning glass is actually pretty easy if you follow these tips:

  • If you have dusty or sandy windows and windshield, then you can easily remove the dirt using a damp microfiber cloth. All you have to do is wipe the glass clear, relying on the microfiber cloth to scrub out any rough dirt stains. What’s wonderful about microfiber cloths is that they are soft and gentle, meaning that they won’t scratch at the car’s glass or paint (if you enjoy washing your car at home and need a safe cleaning cloth).
  • If you have bird droppings, it’s important to get rid of them by hand. People tend to use their windshield wipers when on the go to remove these droppings; however, doing so can dirty the wipers and damage the windshield by scratching it. So try to avoid cleaning bird droppings using the wipers. Instead, as soon as you can, soak your microfiber cloth with club soda and use it to wipe away bird droppings. Club soda makes this type of cleaning easy. Then, you can wash the windshield with water and dry it off properly.
  • You should clean your windshield wipers on a weekly basis to prevent getting an auto glass replacement. You can do so by going to a nearby gas station and using their free windshield cleaning tools. Pay special attention to the surface underneath the wipers, as that can hide a lot of grime. You can also rinse off the wipers with water to get rid of trapped dirt.

A Few Additional Tips

Washing auto glass isn’t the only task you should do every so often. The following are just as important to do:

  • Be sure to replace old windshield wipers when they start to see cracks in the rubber and hear screeching against the glass. Usually, windshield wipers need to be replaced every six months or so.
  • Regularly fill up on the windshield washer fluid, since you might need it to clean the glass at some point while you’re driving.

Washing your car and paying special attention to the windshield and windows can certainly help you prevent an auto glass replacement.

Windshield Repair Situations

At Low Price Auto Glass Orlando, we’ve had people come in with the most bizarre windshield repair situations. For one, those people had delayed and neglected to come to us as soon as their broken auto glass occurred. Then, they went ahead and attempted to fix the glass themselves, using the strangest, most flimsy tools at their disposal. We were so shocked at what we saw, that we just had to share it with you so you don’t make the same mistakes. These people had believed advice strangers had given them, but you should be extra cautious when you fall in the same situations with your vehicle’s glass. Take a look at the worst advice for repairing auto glass:

#1) Tape Can Hold Together Anything, Including Your Broken Windshield

Let’s be clear, tape, no matter in what form, is not going to fix your broken windshield. Adhesive tape is so delicate that you can literally tear it up with your own fingers. Now imagine if you use that tape to hold together a windshield with a chip. Rain can easily soften the tape’s hold on the glass. Even duct tape, which is certainly thicker and bigger, won’t help you. You have a large, heavy windshield in comparison to a piece of tape. It’s not going to hold, and the chip will expand into a crack that then turns into many fissures. Totally not worth it!

#2) Super Glue Permanently Fixes Things, So Why Not the Glass?

Super glue, no matter how strong, is not literally permanent. It does have many benefits, such as putting back together the handle on your favorite coffee mug that you accidentally broke. However, when it comes to broken auto glass, you have to remember that you have a big windshield that’s holding up a heavy car roof. That super glue is only going to create a sticky mess that’s going to be impossible to remove later. And guess what that’ll do? That’ll create a blurry windshield with many light glares. Now, isn’t it better to just go to the professionals before all this mess happens?

nailpolish#3) Nail Polish Makes Nails Strong, So It Has to Work on Windshields!

This advice is so ridiculous, we’re not sure why anyone actually believed it. Nail polish is definitely not going to fix your broken auto glass. Think about it. When someone puts nail polish on their fingernails, it keeps their nails strong for a few days. At first, the color is sparkly and neat, but then it starts to get dull, and that’s when you notice the first chip. Nail polish then peels off, and nails are back to their normal strength. As a result, nail polish is not going to be any different on windshields. It might last for a day or two, but it certainly won’t make a difference. It’ll peel off after being exposed to rain and the harsh heat, and the chip will still turn into a big crack.

#4) There are Special Band-Aids for Windshields That You Can Always Use

Some geniuses out there decided that a great way to fool people into giving them lots and lots of money is to create “special” Band-Aids for windshields. This is obviously complete baloney, but consumers still fell for this trick. Let’s be frank, this is just another form of translucent tape, and it’s not going to hold up a heavy, broken windshield. Don’t listen to these advertisements. Be wise and realize that all of this is just a means to strip you of your money.

A broken auto glass needs to be repaired by an expert rather than get fixed with tools that an eight year old uses in his school’s arts and crafts project. Therefore, don’t hesitate to go to a professional auto glass shop, or you might end up facing worse repairs. When you see a chip in your windshield, take immediate action. You’ll be glad in the end when you save a bunch of your dollars.

Removing Stickers from Car Glass

car glass sticker

If you’re a college student, your school probably made you put up a parking decal on your car. A few months or so later, when you needed to remove that decal to put another one in its place for the new semester, you found that it was the toughest sticker you’ve ever had on your car. The adhesive not only seemed permanently attached in certain areas, but it also kept tempting you to grab your car keys and scratch it out. However, even though such decals—or other stickers on your car for that matter — give you a hard time, we have a method to help you in removing stickers once and for all without any remnants of the glue or any damage to the auto glass.

Simply follow our steps below:

Get Rid of Anything that Scrapes

When many drivers need to remove decals or car stickers off of their auto glass, they tend to grab their car keys and scrape at the sticky paper. This is a very terrible way to remove stickers. First off, it scratches the glass (which costs money to fix). Second off, it helps peel off the paper but does not get rid of the glue on the window. Other objects people tend to use to remove decals and stickers are shaving razors and screwdrivers. Not only do these seem absurd, but just think of all the damage these can cause if you’re using them to scratch stickers off. Just be aware that if others on the internet recommend using these objects, it doesn’t mean that they know what they are talking about.

Spray the Area with Water

After you’ve gotten rid of any tempting but dangerous tools, get a spray bottle and spray the area where the decal is with water. Or, you can simply wash your entire car and go from there. The way water works is that it softens the sticker just enough to help you add other products that do the rest of the removal.

Remove the Sticker/Decal from One Corner at a Time

Next, start out by picking at one corner of the decal with your fingernail, moving diagonally toward the opposite corner. We’ve all done this before, so it shouldn’t be difficult. What can be difficult, though, is the sticker tearing up a little bit of the way through. You’ll just have to pick another corner and repeat this step until all corners are torn. Try your best to get as much of the paper off before the corners tear. Afterward, attempt to remove what remains of the paper with your fingernail. Don’t feel bad if you can’t get rid of it all.

Use Suitable Products to Ease the Removal Process

There are a couple of products out there that are safe to use on auto glass. Some of these products are rubbing alcohol, acetone, and WD-40. We recommend that you use WD-40 because it was designed for the removal of such items as tar, bugs, stickers, and more; it is literally a penetrating oil that helps soften and wipe out unwanted elements. Take WD-40, or the other products mentioned, and rub or spray it on the decal. Then, leave the product to set for a minute or so.

Purchase and Use a Special Razor Blade

While you let the WD-40 set, grab a special windshield-safe razor blade handle and use it to peel off the decal. You can find these razor blade handles in your local auto store. Though they are called “razor blades,” they are not your typical shaving razors. Therefore, they don’t damage the glass when you use them to remove stickers. What you need to do is take the special razor blade and gently slide it against the sticker, peeling it as you go. This should remove all the paper and glue remaining.

Clean the Glass Properly

At the end, clean the glass as you would when you clean your car. Just be sure to use a microfiber cloth to wipe the glass. Whereas sponges and regular rags can scratch the glass, a microfiber cloth is soft, making it safe on car glass. Making sure to clean the glass properly at the end ensures that you wipe away any residue from the WD-40, acetone, or rubbing alcohol. At the same time, doing so keeps the glass in a great condition.

That’s all there is to this method. From now on, you shouldn’t dread removing any decals or stickers off of auto glass. With just the right tools and products, and a little patience, your car’s glass will be clean and back to its original condition.

Mobile Auto Glass Repair

If you wake up one morning to find that your car’s windshield or windows are broken or damaged, then you have to figure out whether that damage is bad enough to keep you from driving your car to an auto glass shop. It is generally recommended that you stop driving your car if something clearly dangerous happens to the glass. In that case, you can always call for a mobile auto glass repair service. However, sometimes, if the damage isn’t too threatening, you might be able to drive your car to an auto glass shop. Yet, how can you tell if the damage is bad enough or not?

Mobile Auto Glass Repair – may not be necessary

Small Chip in the Windshield If the damage is a simple small chip in the windshield, then you are safe to drive your car to an auto glass repair shop, and there’s absolutely no need for you to call for a mobile auto glass repair service. A chip in the windshield won’t put you in harm’s way on the road. Still, it’s best to not delay getting the problem fixed. At the same time, when you drive, be sure to be extra cautiously. After all, that chip can easily turn into a big crack that splits off in many directions. Therefore, if you see a road bump, slow down.

Cracks in the Windows Just like the small chip in the windshield, having a crack in the window shouldn’t be a big issue. So long as you take your car to an auto glass repair shop as soon as you can, you’re good to go. Just don’t wait more than a week or the window might get worse and then you wouldn’t have anything to shield the car’s interior from rain and bugs, among other things.

Tiny Cracks in the Side View Mirrors If there is a tiny crack in one of the side view mirrors, you can still drive your car to a repair shop; you wouldn’t need to call for a mobile repair service. Though, don’t wait too long to fix the damage, since that small crack can still obstruct your driving visibility.

Mobile Auto Glass Repair – may be necessary

Shattered Windshield On the other hand, if your windshield is completely shattered, then do yourself a favor and stop driving your car anywhere, not even if you’re only driving a few houses down. A shattered windshield is highly dangerous, and if you happen to be driving with the wind blowing glass particles at you, you would suddenly realize why. At this point, leave your car alone and call for a mobile auto glass repair service. It’s best that the professionals come to you.

Completely Broken Windows Similarly, if the windows are completely broken, then don’t drive your car. Instead, call for a mobile repair service right away. It’s just not a good idea to drive with shattered glass everywhere and wind in your face.

side-viewShattered Side View Mirrors You should also call for a mobile repair service if one of your side view mirrors is shattered. Without your side view mirrors, you wouldn’t be able to see who’s behind you or who’s driving up to you, and that can be risky. You should, like the other instances, stop driving your car; it’s just not worth getting into a car accident.

Costs of a Mobile Auto Glass Service Great news! Many auto glass repair shops have a mobile auto glass repair service at no additional cost. So if you’re in need of fixing your windows, windshield, or mirrors and you can’t drive your car, calling for the service won’t add more fees to your bill. Though, it is best to check with your auto glass repair shop when you first call them.

The next time your car’s windshield, windows, or mirrors are in a terrible shape that puts you in danger upon driving, call for a mobile auto glass repair service. It won’t increase your repair fees, and it’s absolutely better than getting hurt on the road.

How To Clean Bird Droppings On Your Windshield

Bird droppings on your windshield can happen anytime especially if you are parked under a tree. If not removed properly, bird droppings can lead to an auto glass repair. Many people choose to wipe the bird droppings off with a wet cloth, but is there a better way to do it? There are several ways you should NOT clean bird droppings:

 Towels or Sponges?

Using a sponge to clean bird droppings from your car might seem like a good method, but it can damage your car. Although towels and sponges are often used to clean cars, they are not designed for car cleaning in general. Save your sponges and towels for household dishes. Microfiber cloths are a good choice because they are soft and do not scratch the glass or paint of your car. Thus, if you need to wipe off bird droppings, only use microfiber cloths.

 Windshield Wipers?

Windshield wipers are regularly used to clean the glass and keep it clear. However, using your wipers to clean bird droppings damages the wipers and sometimes even scratches the glass. It is better not to use windshield wipers if you have bird droppings on your windshield. This will help you prevent an auto glass repair.

Dried Bird Droppings?

Bird droppings harden on your windshield and car paint. Therefore, removing them is sometimes difficult. Some drivers choose to scratch at the dried bird droppings using tools such as towels, brushes, or even their fingernail. This can not only scratch the droppings but scratching it can lead to a car glass repair.

Then What Should You Do?

Microfiber cloths are the best choice. Products like WD-40 can soften the bird droppings. Spraying this oil on the bird droppings makes wiping them off with the microfiber cloth easier.

There is a right and a wrong way to clean bird droppings off your car and windshield, and doing it the wrong way can lead to an auto glass repair. Prevent a costly repair with these simple tips!
