road trip ready

Road Trip Ready

To make your car road trip ready, there are several things to do. First, check your tires.

Road Trip and Tire Safety

When they are in good condition and properly inflated, the handling, stability and safety of the vehicle will be maximized. On the other hand, when the tires are not properly inflated,  damaged or worn out, all of the safety systems that you have on your vehicle cannot compensate the loss of control that comes with a blow-out. When air pressure is low, it can also affect poor fuel economy and handling.

Tires naturally lose pressure every month especially at changing temperatures, so ongoing neglect will eventually result in a tire that cannot support the weight of the vehicle and the occupants. When this happens, the resulting blow-out can result in an accident.

Tire Rotation

It’s also important to rotate the tires every 5-7,000 miles. Today’s front-wheel-drive vehicles cause the front tires to wear at a much faster rate than the tires on the rear axle. By periodically rotating the front tires to the back and the back tires to the front, motorists can achieve even treadwear on all four tires and increase the mileage and performance. Failing to rotate the tires often results in the front tires wearing out faster while the rear tires develop irregular treadwear patterns that cause vibrations. Also, when the vehicle is not properly aligned, the tires will wear out faster.

Finally, drivers should perform a visual inspection of their tires on a regular basis, especially after hitting a pothole, curb or any type of road debris. Bulges, cuts and other visible damage weaken the internal components of the tire, which can lead to a blow-out. Regular visual inspections will often identify any potential problems before they result in an accident.

Tire Pressure

A few good rules of thumb are: every time you fill up for gas, every 10 degree change in temperature, or every 30 days.

It’s also a good idea to have the tires inspected by a professional before any long road trips to ensure there are no obvious out-of-service conditions that must be addressed.

Windshield History

The windshield has come a long way since the 19th century, and the future will likely bring many more advances, where did it all start?

Windshield History

Many years have passed since the invention of the gas powered automobile in the 1890s but it wasn’t until about 14 years later that the first windshield in history was invented. That is many years with no protection at all. Drivers and passengers would wear goggles to protect their eyes from the weather or road debris while driving. At first, the windshields were made of two-pieced plate glass. When one layer became dirty, the driver would fold it down. This was realized to be dangerous as what happens when that piece became dirty.

New Windshield Technology

In 1919, Henry Ford employed a new windshield technology, which had a cellulose layer separating two layers of plate glass. This layer held the glass together on impact. It prevented the windshield from shattering in case of an accident or an object hitting the windshield. It did have a drawback – the cellulose became discolored over time.

Windshield Wipers

In 1903 on a visit to New York City, Mary Anderson watched a driver struggle to keep his windshield clear during a snowstorm. The driver had to leave the car to clear the glass. Riders were not happy with the interruption of service. Mary came up with a swinging arm fitted with a rubber blade that the driver could operated from an inside lever. Electric wipers did not surface until the 1920s. (pictured is the patent)

Curved Windshield

It wasn’t until1934 that the curved windshield came into being, which decreased drag and improved aerodynamics. About 15 years later, tempered glass was used on side and rear windows. These windows could withstand terrific blows. This type of glass was not used on the windshields however. Laminated glass is what is used today. It’s composed of a plastic substance between two pieces of tempered glass.

Today, windshield installation is equally as important as the windshield technology itself. Windshields must be installed and bonded properly to help prevent injuries or ejection from the vehicle in the event of an accident.

Fixing chips and cracks in windshields is now much easier because of current technology. Many chips are simply fixed with an adhesive resin rather than replacing the windshield entirely. With the help of Ultraviolet lights much of the strength and integrity are restore to the windshield.  Your windshield is your armor. It protects you from wind, debris, and sunlight, and is very helpful in the event of an accident. It holds up the roof and gives the airbags a backboard to deploy against.

The windshield has come a long way since the 19th century, and the future will likely bring many more advances. But for the here and now, remember to fix chips and cracks immediately because they greatly compromise the strength of your windshield. Also be sure you take your vehicle to a trusted professional because the modern windshield is only as good as the quality of installation.

Preventing Auto Windshield Repairs by Removing Mold

Mold can be common in cars. It is usually found in vehicles that have been neglected and left out in a humid environment. It can also be found in cars where a water spill never dried properly. Food trucks can be easily susceptible to mold if not aired out and cleaned right. The good news is that mold can be dealt with to prevent auto windshield repairs. The bad news is that leaving it to spread throughout your car is dangerous.

There are many types of mold

There are many types of mold, but all of them are generally the same. Mold is an organism that breeds quickly and decays whatever it can. Generally, mold causes organic materials to biodegrade. That is why damp, undried areas, like car seats and carpets, are ideal candidates for this organism. Mold is a living organism that releases spores as it grows, these spores are not good for your health and so it’s important that it’s cleaned and dealt with in the correct way.

Mold is not completely bad. At this very moment, mold spores are in the very air we breathe. In fact, mold, a part of nature, is oftentimes used to produce some types of healthy foods (such as Brie cheese), medicine, and antibiotics. Too much of anything is never good, and that is certainly true when it comes to mold. More mold than is naturally in the air can cause allergic reactions if inhaled. Also, it can destroy (or eat) objects through biodegradation. If mold materializes in your vehicle, you should not ignore it. Mold could ruin various materials within the car including the glass, causing you to get auto windshield repairs.

What causes my windshield to get mold?

There are many reasons for the mold growth in your car. For one, if you left your car parked outdoors for months in a humid or moist environment, then that could cause mold to breed. Second, if you spilled water in the car and did not let it air out completely, that is another reason for the mold.

Is Windshield Mold Dangerous?

Windshield mold is very dangerous. Mold in your car indicates there are other untreated problems. Mold can affect your window seals. Over time, your auto glass might even break from the damage to its window seals. Driving wouldn’t be safe.

Preventing Windshield Mold

If your car has mold, there are ways to combat it and prevent auto windshield repairs.

  • First, you should always keep your car clean. Never leave trash, especially the sort that decomposes naturally (like food). If you spill a drink inside the car, wash it and let the damp area air-dry. Keep the windows down until the spill dries.
  • On the other hand, if you do not drive your car regularly, then turn the AC on from time to time and roll the windows down. Letting the air move is important.
  • Though, if you notice that the window seals are cracking or there is mold on them, stop driving your car and do not attempt to clean the mold on your own. Instead, call a mobile windshield repair expert and have them replace that windshield with another one.

Mold is natural, but too much of it is bad. When found in your car, it can be dangerous and lead to auto windshield repairs if not removed fast. Never leave the mold to spread to your windshield and window seals. If that happens, call for a windshield repair immediately.

bird droppings cleaning

How To Clean Bird Droppings On Your Windshield

Bird droppings on your windshield can happen anytime especially if you are parked under a tree. If not removed properly, bird droppings can lead to an auto glass repair. Many people choose to wipe the bird droppings off with a wet cloth, but is there a better way to do it? There are several ways you should NOT clean bird droppings:

 Towels or Sponges?

Using a sponge to clean bird droppings from your car might seem like a good method, but it can damage your car. Although towels and sponges are often used to clean cars, they are not designed for car cleaning in general. Save your sponges and towels for household dishes. Microfiber cloths are a good choice because they are soft and do not scratch the glass or paint of your car. Thus, if you need to wipe off bird droppings, only use microfiber cloths.

 Windshield Wipers?

Windshield wipers are regularly used to clean the glass and keep it clear. However, using your wipers to clean bird droppings damages the wipers and sometimes even scratches the glass. It is better not to use windshield wipers if you have bird droppings on your windshield. This will help you prevent an auto glass repair.

Dried Bird Droppings?

Bird droppings harden on your windshield and car paint. Therefore, removing them is sometimes difficult. Some drivers choose to scratch at the dried bird droppings using tools such as towels, brushes, or even their fingernail. This can not only scratch the droppings but scratching it can lead to a car glass repair.

Then What Should You Do?

Microfiber cloths are the best choice. Products like WD-40 can soften the bird droppings. Spraying this oil on the bird droppings makes wiping them off with the microfiber cloth easier.

There is a right and a wrong way to clean bird droppings off your car and windshield, and doing it the wrong way can lead to an auto glass repair. Prevent a costly repair with these simple tips!

autumn leaves

Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves changing colors can add to the beauty of your surroundings, however falling leaves may cause problems with your car working properly. During the hurricane, your car may have been covered with leaves if it was not garaged. As you drive the car, the car collects dirt and debris in all kinds of nooks and crannies. Usually a bit of dirt won’t affect the car’s functionality. In some cases though it can be that dirt prevents parts of the car working properly, for example, water leaks due to inadequate drainage of water in wet weather conditions. This occurs at the drain holes just under the windshield.

How does it happen?

Dirt, sand, and decomposing leaves can block the drain holes preventing water to clear underneath the car’s windshield. If the seals around this area are not in a good shape, the water can drip into the foot wells. If not addressed, more expensive repairs can be on the way.

Can this be prevented?

Thankfully, preventing the drains from clogging up can be simple. It just takes some regular effort. It should be noted that water drains are not usually cleaned at regular services.

How should you clean this area?

Should you be so unlucky to already have a blocked drain hole, then try following the following to clean the drains:

  • Accessing the drain holes depends on your car, in some cases it might mean that you would have to remove the windscreen wipers and scuttle.
  • Once having gained access to a drain hole it can usually be cleaned with a flexible wire and flushed with warm water.
  • Seek professional advice if you find that the water still does not drain correctly or if water still leaks into the passenger compartment.

In Conclusion

Don’t forget that every car is a little different and might need a different approach to unclog the drain holes of the residue of the autumn leaves than the one presented here. Seek professional advice if you find that water has seeped through to other areas, risking corrosion of underlying components.
